{"id":30289,"date":"2026-05-23T21:35:29","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T21:35:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trendifyhubusa.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/23\/georgia-veteran-rescues-woman-stranded-on-roof-of-car-during-major-atlanta-floods-on-downtown-connector\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T21:35:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T21:35:29","slug":"georgia-veteran-rescues-woman-stranded-on-roof-of-car-during-major-atlanta-floods-on-downtown-connector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trendifyhubusa.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/23\/georgia-veteran-rescues-woman-stranded-on-roof-of-car-during-major-atlanta-floods-on-downtown-connector\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia veteran rescues woman stranded on roof of car during major Atlanta floods on Downtown Connector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>The dramatic rescue on the Downtown Connector near Baker Street was captured on video as floodwaters rapidly rose along Interstate 75\/85.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>ATLANTA \u2014 A military veteran is being praised after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/news\/local\/major-flooding-impacting-drivers-downtown-connector-atlanta-one-car-currently-trapped\/85-bb6b7129-9ae4-4ac7-b620-bec8cf673680\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rescuing a woman stranded on top of her car<\/a> as flash flooding turned parts of downtown Atlanta into fast-moving rivers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The dramatic rescue on the Downtown Connector near Baker Street was captured on video as floodwaters rapidly rose along Interstate 75\/85.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>George Brathwaite said he and his wife, Chyna, were not even supposed to be on the connector when they spotted the woman sitting on top of her vehicle surrounded by water.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_recirculation article__recirc-long\" style=\"display:none\">\n<div class=\"article__story-continues-banner\">\n<div class=\"article__story-continues-left\">\n                                            <span class=\"article__story-continues-icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\">&#13;<br \/>\n                                                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/assets\/shared-images\/icons\/arrow-circle-down.svg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n                                            <\/span><br \/>\n                                            <span class=\"article__story-continues-text\">&#13;<br \/>\n                                                This story continues below.&#13;<br \/>\n                                            <\/span>\n                                        <\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe see her just sitting in the middle of the street like that,\u201d George Brathwaite said. \u201cI had no choice but to pull over.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>As the woman waited for help, video showed Brathwaite carefully walking through the rushing water before carrying her to safety on his back.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cMy heart and God \u2026 we both seen the girl on top of the car,\u201d Chyna Brathwaite said. \u201cI told him that if he wouldn\u2019t go get her, I was gonna go get her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Even in the middle of the rescue, George Brathwaite said he tried to calm the woman down by talking with her as they crossed the flooded roadway.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201c\u2018You cool with getting on my back?\u2019\u201d he recalled asking her. \u201cI said, \u2018Hey, my name is George. So what\u2019s your name?\u2019 Just trying to start a conversation walking across, but she was stuck. She was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_video\">\n<div data-module=\"video\" class=\"video video_docked_false\" article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Brathwaite joked that he initially hesitated because he was wearing a new pair of sneakers.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cI just had some brand new Forces on,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I really didn\u2019t want to get them messed up. But once I got to her, you could feel it shaking. She was scared.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The woman was taken to safety and waited inside the couple\u2019s truck until Georgia State Patrol arrived.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cIt was a relief once she got over by us, and she kept thanking us,\u201d Chyna Brathwaite said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>The couple, who said they have lived in Atlanta for eight years, said they have never seen flooding this severe in the city.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cSomething clogged up. They need some Drano, that\u2019s what they need,\u201d George Brathwaite said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>Brathwaite served in the military from 2009 to 2013 and completed a tour in Iraq. He said helping someone in danger was an easy decision.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"article__section article__section_type_text utility__text\">\n<p>\u201cHelp somebody,\u201d he said. \u201cMore people riding by just looking at them. Help somebody, man.
