It begins in 1983, when, the opening text assures us, \u201cSome of these things did happen.\u201d<\/p>\n The invented hero, Mart\u00edn de la Torre (Diego Luna), works for Mexico\u2019s soccer federation and believes the organization is floundering. He goes on TV to vent about his boss, a stunt that earns him a meeting with the broadcast media magnate Emilio Azc\u00e1rraga Milmo<\/a> (Daniel Gim\u00e9nez Cacho), widely known as El Tigre. Mart\u00edn pitches him on how he\u2019s going to secure the World Cup in 1986 for Mexico, making the country the first to host the event a second time. El Tigre sees excellent possibilities for his company and satellite transmissions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n With a passion for synergy, Mart\u00edn arrives in Switzerland on a mission to convince various nations\u2019 delegates to FIFA, the International Federation of Association Football, to vote for Mexico. How he secures their support is a blend of appealing to underdog sentiment and, well, money. The film shows Mart\u00edn handing over bags of cash to certain representatives. One need look no further than \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d to see how \u201cMexico 86\u201d might have complicated the audience\u2019s sympathies, but this straightforward crowd-pleaser doesn\u2019t wish to see beyond Mart\u00edn\u2019s charm.<\/p>\n The director, Gabriel Ripstein, comes from a Mexican filmmaking family. His grandfather, Alfredo Ripstein, was a producer, and his father, the director Arturo Ripstein<\/a>, got his start as an aide to Luis Bu\u00f1uel \u2014 a filmmaker who might have brought a tinge of madness<\/a> to Mart\u00edn\u2019s obsession.<\/p>\n
