Corning&#8217;s fiber optic cable and networking solutions are becoming essential elements of AI infrastructure because they enable fast connections between data centers and the racks and chips they house. <\/p>\n<p>Shares of Corning popped 9% Monday. Amazon stock was about 1% higher.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Amazon&#8217;s data centers power the services millions of people and businesses rely on every day,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;Corning&#8217;s fiber optics are a critical piece of that infrastructure, and together, these investments help fuel the U.S. economic engine.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The deal also expands a Corning training program for fiber optic technicians in North Carolina. In the press release, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman said the company&#8217;s investments in the state have created over 26,000 jobs. Corning&#8217;s shares have more than doubled so far this year and are up almost sixfold since the end of 2023. <\/p>\n<p>In May, <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/06\/nvidia-corning-optical-factories-nc-texas-ai.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">investing up to $3.2 billion<\/a> in Corning as part of a deal that involves the glass company building three new advanced manufacturing plants entirely devoted to the chipmaker. And\u00a0in January,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meta<\/a>\u00a0said it would spend up to $6 billion as the flagship customer helping Corning\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/01\/27\/apple-supplier-corning-wins-6-billion-from-meta-for-ai-optical-fiber.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">build out its optical cable plant<\/a>\u00a0in Hickory, North Carolina, an expansion that&#8217;s expected to create around 1,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Corning is well known for making all the display glass for\u00a0<span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-QuoteInBody-9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8216;s iPhone, but optical communications remains its largest and fastest-growing business. Since inventing optical fiber for long-range communication in 1970, Corning has provided millions of miles of cables to connect racks together in AI data centers from all the major players.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration has called on Big Tech to onshore as many steps in the AI supply chain as possible, and Corning helps answer that need. The majority of Corning&#8217;s business happens overseas, which CEO Wendell Weeks told CNBC earlier this year isn&#8217;t changing.
