Group F is one to watch as <strong>Netherlands <\/strong>are probably the favorites to qualify as group winners, but there could be an upset in there.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcotti: Uruguay<\/strong>. I&#8217;m not sure Marcelo Bielsa is suited for this group of players.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ogden: <\/strong>The <strong>United States.<\/strong> When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/465\/turkiye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">T\u00fcrkiye<\/a> won their World Cup playoff against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/18272\/kosovo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kosovo<\/a> in March, it was bad news for the U.S. Turkiye will be the best team in Group D by some distance, so it heaps the pressure on Mauricio Pochettino&#8217;s team to beat Paraguay and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"e8fb3a42-a3b5-f2c8-ab0d-7b23cd7a6035\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia<\/a>. But Pochettino has failed to create a feel-good factor and the U.S. team has done nothing in the past two years to suggest it will suddenly come good now.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O&#8217;Halloran: <\/strong>The <strong>United States.<\/strong> It would be a big shock, but none of their games are surefire wins and they&#8217;ll be under pressure as hosts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olley: <\/strong>It would be a catastrophe in this format if the leading sides failed. Maybe <strong>Australia<\/strong>, given they got to the round of 16 four years ago and only narrowly lost to the eventual winners, Argentina.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Who will become the neutral&#8217;s favorite as the most entertaining team to watch?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Becherano: Spain<\/strong>. Everyone loves an underdog, and you can imagine the hype building through the group stage. As for the latter stages of the competition? Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hernandez: Uruguay. <\/strong>How could you not root for a side led by Marcelo Bielsa? Who knows how far they&#8217;ll go, but it&#8217;ll be brash and relentless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirkland: <\/strong>If <strong>Spain<\/strong> play anything close to the football they played at Euro 2024, they&#8217;ll be the most fun team to watch in the tournament by far.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurens: Colombia<\/strong>. The U.S. will surely make it out of the group &#8212; and could win a knockout match if the draw falls its way &#8212; but the suspicion is it will be found out by one of the more experienced sides.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Which host nation will go the furthest?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Becherano: Mexico<\/strong>. One should never underestimate the power of playing a World Cup at the Estadio Azteca.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connelly: <\/strong>The<strong> U.S.<\/strong>, because I don&#8217;t think Mexico or Canada is making the round of 16.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dawson: Mexico<\/strong>, although their group with South Africa, <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"c9234cfc-835e-ba2d-c299-a202c5acace0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Korea<\/a> and <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"14608173-473c-c347-d753-e45fe20730f5\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=450\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Czechia<\/a> is tougher than people seem to think.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamilton: <\/strong>I&#8217;m going for <strong>Mexico <\/strong>&#8212; the Azteca Stadium factor is huge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hernandez: Mexico. <\/strong>A favorable group should provide a run into at least the quarterfinal stage for <em>El Tri<\/em>. Anything further would be a historic success for the nation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirkland: Canada<\/strong>. I could see them making the quarters, where they&#8217;d likely be eliminated by the first top team they&#8217;d face. But that would still make them the best-performing host nation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurens: <\/strong>I have a feeling that Mexico and Canada will both finish second in their groups, which means they will face each other in the round of 32 in Los Angeles. I think it&#8217;s a tight game, but Canada will progress. Then it should be super tough for them against one of Morocco, Brazil, Japan or Netherlands, where they would lose regardless of the opposition. But you could make a case for the U.S. easily enough.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Which player will everyone be talking about as the breakout star of the tournament?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Becherano: <\/strong>All the hype before the World Cup points to Mexico&#8217;s <strong><a data-player-guid=\"5220f4ae-9d46-35e2-8fa6-0daa0b1578c3\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/389575\/gilberto-mora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gilberto Mora<\/a><\/strong>, the tournament&#8217;s youngest player at 17.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connelly: <a data-player-guid=\"ba2fd99c-bc86-9ef0-80b9-16b2a77cb1be\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/286831\/michael-olise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michael Olise<\/a><\/strong>. He&#8217;s one of the most exciting talents in this competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lindop: Diomande<\/strong> is one of the most prominent players in the transfer rumor mill right now, and I think he could have a lot of eyes on him when he steps out for the Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcotti: Diomande<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ogden: <\/strong>This will be Lamine Yamal&#8217;s tournament, but it&#8217;s a stretch to suggest he will be a breakout star considering the 18-year-old&#8217;s status already. So I am going to call out<strong> Arda G\u00fcler<\/strong> as the player everybody will be talking about. He is becoming a star at <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"66434654-a8ba-a04c-98e5-6bbd0dbbb780\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=86\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Real Madrid<\/a>, but the T\u00fcrkiye midfielder will announce himself on a global stage this summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O&#8217;Halloran: <\/strong><strong>G\u00fcler<\/strong>. He has the ability to provide big highlight moments and can excel as a young star playing a big role on his team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olley: Diomande<\/strong>. The cat is already out of the bag to some extent given he is Bundesliga Rookie of the Year, but the teenage winger can go to the next level.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Best group stage match?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Becherano: Portugal vs. Colombia<\/strong> is not only bound to be great on the field, but being hosted in Miami adds a whole new level of stardom to that match.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connelly: <\/strong>I mean, it&#8217;s really hard to beat <strong>France vs. Norway<\/strong>, isn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dawson: France vs. Norway<\/strong>. Haaland against Mbapp\u00e9; what&#8217;s not to like?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamilton: Senegal vs. Norway<\/strong> &#8212; that&#8217;s going to be box office (closely followed by Japan-Netherlands)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hernandez: Spain vs. Uruguay <\/strong>is one of those matches that could easily be a round-of-16 or quarterfinal clash. It&#8217;s Haaland vs. Mbapp\u00e9, so what more could you want? France are one of the favorites, but Norway could be a dangerous outsider with the likes of Haaland and \u00d8degaard on their team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O&#8217;Halloran: Brazil vs. Morocco<\/strong>. Both teams&#8217; opening game will see the winner probably head to the knockouts, while the loser must salvage their tournament as soon as it has begun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Olley: Spain vs. Uruguay<\/strong>. Expanding the competition to 48 teams dilutes the competitiveness, but the favorites versus an unpredictable Marcelo Bielsa team sounds like fun.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2>Last but not least, one bold prediction for anything on or off the pitch<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Becherano: <\/strong>Canada is eliminated from the competition in the group stage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Connelly: <\/strong>Iran is making the knockout rounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dawson: <\/strong>Thomas Tuchel quits as England coach before the end of the summer. The expectation and the heat is too much, things don&#8217;t go well and despite signing a contract extension in February, everyone decides it&#8217;s best to part ways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamilton: <\/strong>U.S. center back<strong> <\/strong><a data-player-guid=\"b9b826c5-6593-d43d-806e-7704da069e30\" href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/soccer\/player\/_\/id\/146290\/tim-ream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Ream<\/a> is going to establish himself as a national icon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hernandez: <\/strong>Only four European nations will be quarterfinalists. In 2022, there were five. In 2018, there were six. The rest of the world, and a host nation or two, are catching up.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirkland: <\/strong>The weather will be a huge talking point for fans and players, from soaring temperatures to game-delaying thunderstorms (as it was at the Club World Cup last summer).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurens: <\/strong>No European country has ever won the World Cup in the Americas. It will change this year. And it will be even better than that, as my bold prediction is that the final will actually be contested by two European teams.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lindop: <\/strong>I think the final, like in 2022, will be decided on penalties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcotti: <\/strong>Folks will show up at Iran games with the pre-Revolution flag, and FIFA will have to decide whether it&#8217;s a political gesture and whether to confiscate the flags.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ogden: <\/strong>Some games are going to be an embarrassment for FIFA due to vast numbers of empty seats. It&#8217;s hard to see big crowds turning out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/452\/bosnia-herzegovina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bosnia-Herzegovina<\/a> vs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/4398\/qatar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Qatar<\/a> (Seattle), Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia (Houston) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team\/_\/id\/2850\/congo-dr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Congo DR<\/a> vs. <a data-clubhouse-guid=\"d0d6d2f4-fc16-6016-f018-e0ac248cd6d3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/team?id=2570\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Uzbekistan<\/a> (Atlanta).<\/p>\n<p><strong>O&#8217;Halloran: <\/strong>Two African teams make the semifinals.
