{"id":33351,"date":"2026-06-13T05:05:31","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T05:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/trendifyhubusa.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/13\/judge-blocks-national-parks-from-removing-negative-signs-and-depictions-of-slavery\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T05:05:31","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T05:05:31","slug":"judge-blocks-national-parks-from-removing-negative-signs-and-depictions-of-slavery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/trendifyhubusa.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/13\/judge-blocks-national-parks-from-removing-negative-signs-and-depictions-of-slavery\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge Blocks National Parks From Removing \u2018Negative\u2019 Signs and Depictions of Slavery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">A federal judge on Friday temporarily blocked the National Park Service from removing or revising signs, films and other materials at national parks across the country to comply with a directive from President Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The ruling pauses enforcement of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/03\/restoring-truth-and-sanity-to-american-history\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an executive order<\/a> that called for removing or covering up materials at national parks that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/22\/climate\/trump-national-park-service-history-changes.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cinappropriately disparage Americans\u201d<\/a> or cast the United States \u201cin a negative light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The judge, Angel Kelley of the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts, also ordered the Park Service to restore within three weeks any exhibits that it had dismantled or altered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The ruling provides a temporary reprieve for the plaintiffs, a coalition of advocacy groups that sued over the executive order in February, while the litigation continues to unfold.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">To comply with the president\u2019s directive, the Park Service has taken down <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/22\/us\/politics\/park-service-philadelphia-slavery-exhibit.html?eafs_enabled=false\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plaques about slavery<\/a> at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/22\/climate\/park-service-erases-climate-facts-at-fort-sumter-where-the-civil-war-began.html?eafs_enabled=false\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sign about climate change<\/a> at Fort Sumter in South Carolina and a sign about Indigenous people at Acadia National Park in Maine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Another federal judge has already <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/02\/02\/us\/politics\/judge-george-washington-slavery.html?eafs_enabled=false\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ordered the Park Service<\/a> not to make further changes to the slavery exhibit at the President\u2019s House Site at Independence National Historical Park, as she considers a separate lawsuit filed by Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Judge Kelley, who was nominated by President Joseph R. Biden Jr., sharply rebuked the Trump administration for taking down materials. \u201cNot only does this undermine the integrity of the national parks; it sets a dangerous precedent of censorship and sanitization,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Judge Kelley began <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mad.296214\/gov.uscourts.mad.296214.41.0.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">her 63-page ruling<\/a> by listing examples of national parks that help educate visitors about difficult periods of American history, as well as contributions made by people of color, gay and transgender figures, women and other marginalized groups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cFrom the echoes of abolition in John Brown\u2019s Fort in Harpers Ferry, to the genesis of the modern L.G.B.T.Q.+ civil rights movement at the Stonewall National Monument, to the retreating ice of Glacier National Park in Alaska, the national parks preserve the multifaceted and multilayered history of our nation, including the good, the bad and the ugly,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In the lawsuit, the plaintiffs argued that removing the materials was \u201carbitrary and capricious,\u201d in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act. They also accused the Park Service of exceeding its legal authority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Katie Martin, a spokeswoman for the Interior Department, the parent agency of the Park Service, suggested that the administration would appeal the ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cThis ruling is from a liberal activist judge,\u201d Ms. Martin said in an email. \u201cThe department will look at our appeal options while we celebrate U.F.C. Freedom 250 on the South Lawn of the White House this weekend in honor of our nation\u2019s 250th with the greatest president in the history of our country \u2014 President Donald J. Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Emily Thompson, the executive director of the Coalition to Protect America\u2019s National Parks, one of the advocacy groups that brought the lawsuit, applauded the ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cNational parks are not propaganda tools, nor should they be used for partisan purposes,\u201d Ms. Thompson said in a statement. \u201cThey exist to preserve and interpret the full American story, not just the parts that make some politicians comfortable.
