READING, Pa – State lawmakers have until the fall before law enforcement will need to start removing skill machines.<\/p>\n
Pennsylvania’s highest court says all those so-called “skill machines” that seem to be everywhere nowadays are unlawful.<\/p>\n
Gov. Josh Shapiro reacted to the ruling.<\/p>\n
“I think we all knew we need to do something to regulate and tax skill games,” Shapiro said. “What I’d encourage the Republican leadership in the Senate to do is work with the Democratic leadership in the Senate and see what kind of package can get 26 votes in their chamber, and get that bill to my desk.\u201d<\/p>\n
There are many businesses as well as nonprofits like Veterans of Foreign Wars and fire social halls that have these machines.<\/p>\n
“The proliferation of skill machines has gotten to the level where it\u2019s out of control,” Berks County District Attorney John Adams said. “Skill machines are not taxed, are not regulated.”<\/p>\n
But what about those nonprofits like the VFW’s that use these machines to fund their organizations?<\/p>\n
“Clearly, we’re hoping that the legislature carves out an exception for clubs, and when I use the term \u2018clubs,\u2019 I’m talking the nonprofit clubs \u2014 the fire companies, the American Legions, the social clubs,” Adams said. “I think if they’re in our social clubs, our nonprofit fire halls, I have no issue with that whatsoever. I think it needs to continue to be a revenue source for our social clubs and for our nonprofits.”<\/p>\n
Adams says there are thousands of unregulated machines across the Commonwealth, and the state is missing out on big money.<\/p>\n
“We are just giving away all that revenue that otherwise could be taxed by the government and could be income for the government,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
