They had taken in the Statue of Liberty and the 9\/11 Memorial and walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. Now on a near-summer Wednesday afternoon in Central Park, the family was relaxing with a leisurely ride in an old-fashioned horse-drawn carriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Near the fountain at Cherry Hill in the park, the driver stopped to take a family portrait of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan, his parents and his little brother. The driver stepped away from the red-and-white carriage to frame the shot, Deepak Mahajan, Romanch\u2019s father, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">In an instant, the horse bolted. It tore up onto the sidewalk and bumped onto the grass, accelerating crazily, the driver racing behind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cWe were yelling, \u2018Help me, help me!\u201d Mr. Mahajan said. The family clung desperately to one another, but when Mr. Mahajan\u2019s wife, Priya, fell out of the carriage, Romanch jumped down to try to help her, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cMy son, just to save his mother, he fell off,\u201d said Mr. Mahajan, 44. \u201cHe was screaming, \u2018Mom!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Romanch hit his head on the ground and lay still.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">He died Wednesday night at NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center. The rest of the family escaped with minor injuries, though their carriage clipped another carriage and toppled over, shattering into pieces.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The accident, which occurred around 2:45 p.m., was the latest in a very long series of mishaps involving carriage horses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The union that represents carriage drivers said it never should have happened.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cIt appears the driver was at least at arm\u2019s length from his horse,\u201d Alexander Kemp, a vice president of the union, Transport Workers Union Local 100, said in a statement. \u201cThis is unacceptable. A driver is not supposed to leave the carriage to take photos \u2014 ever. We support a full investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">He said the horse, a 7-year-old named Sampson who appeared to be uninjured, had been working in the park for only six weeks and will be retired. The driver, whose name was not immediately released, has been suspended indefinitely by the carriage\u2019s owner, Mr. Kemp added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The accident immediately led to renewed calls from animal advocates, elected officials and the Central Park Conservancy, which runs the park, to ban carriages from the park. There are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.twulocal100.org\/central-park-horse-carriages\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more than 100 carriage horses<\/a> in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cWe cannot allow this to be treated as another isolated incident,\u201d City Councilman Christopher Marte, who has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/legistar.council.nyc.gov\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=8067835&amp;GUID=53C552B4-4BC2-41DA-A14A-560E74E7F3E1&amp;Options=ID|Text|&amp;Search=marte\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">introduced a bill<\/a> to ban carriages at the end of next year, said in a statement. \u201cThe Council must act with the urgency this tragedy demands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The City Council speaker, Julie Menin, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/speakermenin\/status\/2067408217924121023?s=10\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced Wednesday night<\/a> that the Council would take up Mr. Marte\u2019s bill next month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The park conservancy said that there had been eight \u201chorse-related incidents\u201d in or near the park since May 2025, including one last month where a horse <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/19\/nyregion\/central-park-nyc-horse-carriage-collision.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hit another carriage<\/a> and caused it to tip over, and one in January where a horse <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/13\/nyregion\/central-park-carriage-horse-video-ban.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ran into oncoming traffic<\/a> and hit several cars. Last week, a carriage horse named Deniz <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/16\/nyregion\/carriage-horse-central-park-death-poisonous-plant.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died after eating Japanese yew<\/a>, a plant that is toxic to horses, in the park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Both the conservancy and NYCLASS, which has waged a yearslong effort to end the carriage-horse trade, said the death was the first human fatality in a horse carriage accident they were aware of.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cWe were on the steps of City Hall last week saying somebody was going to die,\u201d Edita Birnkrant, the executive director of NYCLASS, said. \u201cNow it has happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">NYCLASS called on Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/nyc-horse-carriage-industry-city-approved-veterinarian\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said he supports removing carriage horses from the park<\/a>, to issue an executive order banning them immediately.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Mr. Mamdani called the death a \u201chorrific incident\u201d in a statement on Wednesday night. \u201cI look forward to working with City Council, union partners, carriage drivers, animal welfare advocates and community leaders to deliver a just transition that protects workers while ending horse-drawn carriages in Central Park once and for all,\u201d the mayor said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">The park conservancy, which long avoided taking a position on carriage horses but <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/08\/12\/nyregion\/central-park-horse-carriages.html\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">began calling for them to be banned<\/a> last year, said it was devastated to hear of Mr. Mahajan\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">\u201cA young man came to enjoy our park and lost his life,\u201d the conservancy said in a statement. \u201cThat is not an acceptable cost of an antiquated industry operating in the middle of one of the most heavily used public spaces in America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Videos posted on X show the carriage <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/theirturn\/status\/2067343271399985344\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dashing around a corner<\/a> and then, seconds later, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/newyorkers_x\/status\/2067335941140664565\/video\/1?s=46\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">hitting the other carriage<\/a> and tipping over.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Early Wednesday evening, the carriage was still overturned on West Drive, its front wheels broken off its body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-140ip4z e1me5xab0\">Mr. Mahajan said the family had booked a once-in-a-lifetime trip to celebrate Romanch\u2019s graduation from high school.
