Hong Kong\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.HSI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hang Seng Index<\/a>\u00a0slipped 0.63% in the final hour of trade, while the mainland&#8217;s CSI 300 was up 2.39% at 5,059.66. Australia&#8217;s benchmark S&amp;P\/ASX 200 was 0.14% lower at 8,816.10. <\/p>\n<p>European markets started a new trading week higher, with the <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"LiveStory-SpecialReport-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.STOXX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stoxx 600<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> up 0.12%. Most sectors were in the red, however, with losses led by retail and construction. <\/p>\n<p>Brent oil futures <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/22\/oil-prices-wti-brent-crude-trump-iran-threat-strait-hormuz-closure.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turned negative<\/a> on Monday after mediators Qatar and Pakistan said that U.S. and Iranian officials had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/22\/us-iran-roadmap-final-deal-switzerland-talks-lebanon-deconfliction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed on a roadmap<\/a>\u00a0to reach a final deal within 60 days.<\/p>\n<p>International benchmark\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@LCO.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brent crude<\/a>\u00a0futures for August gained in early Asian trading, then fell 0.38% to $80.26 a barrel. U.S.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/@CL.1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West Texas Intermediate futures<\/a>\u00a0for July pared a 3% jump in earlier trading to be about 1% higher, at $77.52 per barrel.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The three leading U.S. indexes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/17\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">staged a comeback<\/a> Thursday after a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/16\/stock-market-today-live-updates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sell-off on Wednesday<\/a>, with the declines fueled by investor uncertainty about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/17\/fed-projections-call-for-a-rate-hike-in-2026-but-chairman-warsh-likely-abstained.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trajectory of monetary policy<\/a>. The U.S. stock market was closed on Friday for the Juneteenth holiday.<\/p>\n<p>A key test for the market this week will be the release on Thursday of May&#8217;s reading on the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed&#8217;s preferred inflation gauge. Even excluding volatile food and energy prices, core PCE is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/18\/next-weeks-inflation-data-is-vitally-important-whats-ahead-for-the-market.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expected to increase<\/a> from April, according to economists polled by FactSet.<\/p>\n<p>Following last week&#8217;s hawkish Fed meeting, expectations of an interest rate increase were pulled forward to as soon as October.
