The Tigers have selected the contract of outfielder Ben Malgeri<\/a><\/strong> from Triple-A Toledo, per a club announcement. Fellow outfielder Trei Cruz<\/a><\/strong> was optioned to Toledo in his place, and a 40-man roster spot was opened up by transferring injured righty Burch Smith<\/a><\/strong> from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL.<\/p>\n Malgeri, 26, was Detroit\u2019s 18th-round pick out of Northeastern back in 2021. He\u2019s never ranked among the organization\u2019s top-30 prospects over at Baseball America, but you wouldn\u2019t know that taking a look at his 2026 numbers. He\u2019s strolled to the plate 297 times this season and turned in a terrific .296\/.401\/.496 batting line with nine homers, 17 doubles, three triples, eight steals (in 10 attempts), a huge 12.8% walk rate and a 24.9% strikeout rate. He\u2019s sporting a strong 45% hard-hit rate and an 11.2% barrel rate with the Mud Hens.<\/p>\n The addition of Malgeri gives the Tigers a righty-swinging bat who can handle any of the three outfield slots. He\u2019s split his time nearly evenly between right field and left field this season while mixing in six starts in center. Though he hasn\u2019t played much center this season, that\u2019s largely been in deference to top outfield prospect Max Clark<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 the No. 3 overall pick from 2023\u2019s draft and a consensus top-15 prospect in the entire sport. Malgeri has played far more center field than corner outfield in his career prior to the 2026 season.<\/p>\n The Tigers have been piecing things together in center field all season. Injuries have kept Parker Meadows<\/a><\/strong> on the shelf for most of the season, and Javier Baez<\/a><\/strong> has been out since late April due to an ankle injury. Both are on the 60-day IL. Wenceel P\u00e9rez<\/a><\/strong> has spent a fair bit of time in center but is also sidelined \u2014 in his case due to an orbital fracture. All of those injuries have led to Matt Vierling<\/a><\/strong> taking the bulk of the reps in center this season, but he\u2019s struggling through the least-productive offensive campaign of his career. DFA pickup James Outman<\/a><\/strong> has seen some run in center recently as well, but he\u2019s fanned in 43.2% of his plate appearances between three clubs dating back to last season.<\/p>\n All of that will culminate in Malgeri getting the first big league look of his five-year professional career.
