He has become as indispensable to his country as he has to Arsenal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But his early removal against Croatia on Wednesday and subsequent comments about a hamstring issue that he has been managing raised questions about the fitness of one of England\u2019s most important players \u2014 and at a crucial time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rice, 27, was replaced after 72 minutes with England leading 3-2 in their opening World Cup group game, which they won 4-2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>England\u2019s head coach Thomas Tuchel described the decision as precautionary after Rice felt discomfort around his upper hamstring and lower back. But a<\/span><span>s former England defender and pundit Gary Neville summarised: <\/span>\u201cYou don\u2019t rest Declan Rice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>Rice later revealed he has been managing \u201cneural pain\u201d during the second half of the season, including through Arsenal\u2019s Premier League title win and run to the Champions League final.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/downloadapp\/2026-wc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Get free access to the most comprehensive World Cup coverage in The Athletic app<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>So what is neural pain, can he continue to play through it and might it affect his performance?<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><b>What did Rice say?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>\u201cI\u2019m ready and fit, raring to go,\u201d Rice told ITV Sport, in an interview broadcast on Saturday. \u201cI was feeling a little bit of neural pain in my hamstring, which I was managing from after Christmas with Arsenal for a very long time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cObviously, not a lot of people would have known that. It was all behind-the-scenes stuff, but it was a smart decision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rice said the closing stages of matches are when the physical cost can become greatest and explained why Tuchel made the decision to take him off in Dallas. Rice insisted, however, that he is fit to face Ghana on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cYou play a 70-minute match, but that last 20 is where you really feel your body going for it,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt\u2019s an obscene amount of games, the schedule was crazy, but what can we do about it? Irritation along that pathway can cause pain around the hamstring even when the muscle has not torn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>James Vickers, a consultant physiotherapist at Marylebone Health Group, compared the nerve to \u201ca wire running through the body\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhat it sounds like Rice may have is what we call neurogenic pain, where the nerve is getting snagged or irritated outside the spinal column,\u201d Vickers said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tight muscles, imbalances or scar tissue can prevent the nerve moving freely, causing the hamstring to tighten protectively and creating a cycle of tension and pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThere\u2019s not anything actually breaking,\u201d Vickers said. \u201cIt is more irritation. It needs a settling-down period.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><b>How does neural hamstring pain impact performance?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>Daniel Booth, founder of performance consultancy MyoLab and a former head of performance at Watford, says neural problems can be unpredictable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey can feel almost completely settled one day and flare with no obvious trigger the next,\u201d Booth said. \u201cHeat, fatigue, sustained postures or a change in training load can wind them back up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The problem could affect Rice\u2019s posterior chain \u2014 the glutes, hamstrings and calves that generate force during pressing, sprinting and physical duels \u2014 as the body protects the irritated nerve involuntarily.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-ath-video-stream=\"y4pW7tpQe4gMOtq\">\n<div class=\"VideoHost_Root__QeM_i\">\n<div class=\"VideoHost_VideoWidth__XjNKI VideoHost_Portrait__XBaJC\">\n<div class=\"VideoTitleFrame_Root__AGckL\">\n<div>\n<p>How far can England actually go at the World Cup?<\/p>\n<p>Jack Pitt-Brooke and Rachael Tinde<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cThe player isn\u2019t making a conscious decision to hold back \u2014 the nervous system makes it for them,\u201d Booth said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That can leave a player \u201coperating slightly below their actual ceiling\u201d, with small reductions in stride length, acceleration or power through the hip.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Booth said fatigue can accelerate the drop-off during the final 20 to 30 minutes, the period in which Rice was removed against Croatia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cEvery unnecessary minute avoided in the group stage is minutes in the bank for a quarter-final or semi-final when you simply can\u2019t take him off,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><b>How much has Declan Rice played during the 2025-26 campaign?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>The Croatia match was Rice\u2019s 63rd appearance of the season \u2014 55 for Arsenal and eight for England.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7382531\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/athletic\/uploads\/wp\/2026\/06\/22054534\/england_squad_mins_720.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><span>He has played 360 matches for club and country since the beginning of 2020-21, reflecting six seasons with few extended breaks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>If England reach the final and Rice features in every game, he could finish the season with 70 appearances.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><b>How important is Rice for England?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>There is no like-for-like replacement; he shields the centre-backs, carries possession through pressure and delivers set pieces, including the corner for England\u2019s second goal against Croatia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>His substitution prompted an immediate reshuffle. Morgan Rogers came on at No 10, with Jude Bellingham dropping alongside Elliot Anderson. Eight minutes later, Djed Spence replaced Bellingham and Reece James moved into midfield from right-back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Kobbie Mainoo and Jordan Henderson are Tuchel\u2019s other midfield options available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Any attempt to replace Rice requires Tuchel to weaken or reorganise another part of the team.
