Tigers Select Ben Malgeri – MLB Trade Rumors

The Tigers have selected the contract of outfielder Ben Malgeri from Triple-A Toledo, per a club announcement. Fellow outfielder Trei Cruz was optioned to Toledo in his place, and a 40-man roster spot was opened up by transferring injured righty Burch Smith from the 15-day IL to the 60-day IL.

Malgeri, 26, was Detroit’s 18th-round pick out of Northeastern back in 2021. He’s never ranked among the organization’s top-30 prospects over at Baseball America, but you wouldn’t know that taking a look at his 2026 numbers. He’s strolled to the plate 297 times this season and turned in a terrific .296/.401/.496 batting line with nine homers, 17 doubles, three triples, eight steals (in 10 attempts), a huge 12.8% walk rate and a 24.9% strikeout rate. He’s sporting a strong 45% hard-hit rate and an 11.2% barrel rate with the Mud Hens.

The addition of Malgeri gives the Tigers a righty-swinging bat who can handle any of the three outfield slots. He’s split his time nearly evenly between right field and left field this season while mixing in six starts in center. Though he hasn’t played much center this season, that’s largely been in deference to top outfield prospect Max Clark — the No. 3 overall pick from 2023’s draft and a consensus top-15 prospect in the entire sport. Malgeri has played far more center field than corner outfield in his career prior to the 2026 season.

The Tigers have been piecing things together in center field all season. Injuries have kept Parker Meadows on the shelf for most of the season, and Javier Baez has been out since late April due to an ankle injury. Both are on the 60-day IL. Wenceel PĆ©rez has spent a fair bit of time in center but is also sidelined — in his case due to an orbital fracture. All of those injuries have led to Matt Vierling taking the bulk of the reps in center this season, but he’s struggling through the least-productive offensive campaign of his career. DFA pickup James Outman has seen some run in center recently as well, but he’s fanned in 43.2% of his plate appearances between three clubs dating back to last season.

All of that will culminate in Malgeri getting the first big league look of his five-year professional career. Whether he sticks or is just a short-term placeholder will hinge on his own play and the health of the rest of Detroit’s outfield group, but he’s hit his way into this position and will get a chance to make the most of those strong minor league numbers.
