FIFA World Cup 2026: Meet Suzuki Zion, Japan’s finally found saviour in goal

Suzuki Zion: “It doesn’t change what we do”

Goalkeeping has long been considered to be the weak link for Japan, but Suzuki is trying to change that and is doing an admirable job so far.

He is a burly 1.90m with excellent feet and cat-like reflexes, and it is of no coincidence that he previously fetched an offer from Manchester United, who, among other suitors, are reportedly set to make another bid for him this summer.

Suzuki was born in Newark, New Jersey, before he and his family moved to Japan, where his mother is from. He came through the youth system atĀ Urawa Reds, the J.League’s most fanatically supported team, and became the club’s youngest-ever to sign a professional contract at the age of 16 years, five months in 2019.

After reaching the top flight in 2021, Suzuki bolted for the rigours of Europe at Sint-Truiden in Belgium two years later – while turning down a move to Old Trafford because he felt he did not have enough games under his belt – before landing at Parma in the summer of 2024 as the first Japanese keeper to play in the Serie A.

Having been born on American soil, U.S. Soccer made a run at Suzuki, to persuade him into wearing the Stars and Stripes – but Suzuki was set on suiting up for the Samurai Blue. His decision on allegiance has turned out to be one of the best things to happen to Japanese football in recent years.

And Suzuki is off to a fast start in showing USA what they missed out on, in what could have been a home World Cup for the gentle giant.

ā€œLooking back on how the teams have played us up until now, I think the other teams are respecting Japan. But for us, it doesn’t change what we do.

ā€œI don’t know how to phrase it, but commanding respect is one thing and doing what we have to do is another. It’s important to understand that.ā€Ā

Suzuki, for sure, will be taking that mindset to the Tunisia game on Saturday.
