U.S. Open 2026: ‘I’m not going to go there’ … Emiliano Grillo didn’t want to talk about his past at Shinnecock for good reason | Golf News and Tour Information
Emiliano Grillo looked like he was playing a different golf course at times on Saturday. Afterward he didn’t want to talk about that course the last time he visited.
Grillo shot 67 in the third round of the U.S. Open to make the biggest move on Moving Day at Shinnecock Hills. It was a stark difference from his performance in the 2018 U.S. Open, which, understandly, he didn’t want to talk about much when asked to compare the experience.
Q. What do you remember about here in 2018?
EMILIANO GRILLO: Nothing. It was a blur. I’m not going to go there. I hated every minute of it. It was dry. It was windy. I hated every minute of it. Let’s not go there.
Probably for the best, Emiliano. We’re pretty sure just about every sports psychologist would advise the same with the position you’re in heading into Sunday.
Grillo shot 76-73 in 2018 to miss the cut. But now the 33-year-old is in great shape to record his best U.S. Open finish in eight starts. Not surprisingly, he’d rather keep the good vibes flowing.
“I’ve been in contention a few majors here and there, but it’s just hard golf courses, hard setups,” Grillo said. “You have to be patient. You have to be on top of your game. Then you have to get lucky, get lucky with the draw. There’s a lot of things out there that needs to be together in order to beat these guys that are really, really good at it.”
